I do have friends i can get notes from, i just learn much better in the class vs reviewing it myself from home. even just some understanding with deadlines would help, but they said it’s not possible. i submit a lot of assignments right before midnight, and a lot after midnight because i don’t gauge the amount of time it will take properly. my drc specialist said no extended deadlines, basically under any circumstances. Thank you for your input! i know canvas is already super complicated, but even knowing my teacher is expecting me to email her the first quarter of a project by a certain date can be enough to keep me on track. Some profs are definitely assholes about accommodations but many of us are understanding. Have you talked with your profs? I already do many things (students can turn assignments in late, scaffold big assignments, etc.) but it's always helpful to hear what else may be helpful to students. (This only works though if your friends will work and not chat!) There are accommodations for note-taking, but I believe that depends if someone in your class is willing to take notes, and the quality of the notes then depends on the person who volunteers.Ĭould you do some study groups? Even if your friends aren't in the same classes, just having set times to meet up and work for a few hours at a time used to really help me with procrastination. I used to see that accommodation often, but not lately, so perhaps they don't offer that anymore, but I always thought that might be good for procrastinators since they have a second "hard" deadline. One thing I've seen is having 24 or 48-hour extended deadlines. Even something like early access is not as straightforward as one would hope I had a student who needed to work ahead in a course and the workaround we created in canvas confused my other students then. I don't think it'd be possible to create mini-assignments for one student only. I'm an instructor and Canvas does not always make things easy for us. I really get what it's like, and I hope things will get better for us We shouldn't have to kill ourselves trying to work three times as hard just to get to where others start off, but the best we can do is take care of ourselves and stop beating ourselves up for something that's not our fault. It's a motivational disorder associated with a dopamine deficiency, and medication has really helped me in that regard. While there are definitely habits and coping mechanisms people can help you develop, there can still be a neurological barrier for people like me with ADHD. But they don't give that accommodation, and they said to make an appointment with GatorWell instead. I tried to ask my DRC specialist about adding mini due dates and having teachers break assignments up into chunks, for example having 1/4 of a project due every week instead of the whole project due in a month. It doesn't matter when the deadline is, we'll still procrastinate. I have the same 3 accommodations, and I completely agree about the early access. My friend with ADHD was offered breaks in class, which I would also benefit from, but wasn’t offered.īasically just curious to see what others similar to me find useful so I know what to discuss in my follow-up appointment. Something like lecture recordings and powerpoint notes would help me stay on track and fill in gaps I miss during class. what accommodations they have been offered! I am not sure what to even ask for beyond what I was given. I would like to ask anyone with ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, etc. If I wait until the last minute for assignments anyway, early access wouldn’t help me. I’m very grateful for these, but I feel like she didn’t take my personal struggles into account. My DRC appointment went okay… my specialist didn’t even look at the letters written by my therapist and psychiatrist before giving me the standard ADHD accommodations (1.5 time, low distraction testing, early access to assignments). After struggling through 2.5 years here I have worked up the courage to accept help without feeling like a failure.
